“On The Origin Of This Playlist”
A patient, methodical observer who found beauty in small, repeated variations over enormous timescales. He suffered chronic illness and found genuine solace in music, reportedly regretting in his autobiography that he had let his taste for it atrophy.
Editor's note Darwin is thought to have listened to this playlist twice through, taken careful notes on the gradual variation between tracks, and concluded that Coldplay represented a remarkably successful adaptation within a competitive musical environment.
The seven
- 01The Sound of Silence — Simon & Garfunkel (1964)He spent five years on the Beagle largely seasick and alone with his notebooks. This is the sound of that isolation.
- 02Africa — Toto (1982)He never set foot in sub-Saharan Africa, but the longing for distant, unmapped wilderness is unmistakably his.
- 03Breathe — Pink Floyd (1973)He wrote in his autobiography of regretting losing his love of music to decades of obsessive work. This is what he was missing.
- 04The Scientist — Coldplay (2002)Almost too on the nose to include, until you remember he genuinely agonised for twenty years before publishing his theory.
- 05Fix You — Coldplay (2005)Written for grief; he lost his beloved daughter Annie at age ten and never fully recovered.
- 06Survival — Muse (2012)Written for the London Olympics, but the title alone makes this the most literal possible inclusion.
- 07Eye of the Tiger — Survivor (1982)Survival of the fittest, basically. He would never admit to liking it but would absolutely hum it while classifying barnacles.
