No. 009 · Prince · Hamlet, written c. 1599-1601
“To Stream Or Not To Stream”
Brooding, philosophically paralysed, and prone to existential spirals he narrates aloud at great length. He trusts almost no one, suspects everyone, and processes grief through increasingly elaborate internal monologue.
Editor's note Hamlet listened to this playlist for several hours while holding a skull, occasionally pausing the music to deliver a forty-line monologue about whether listening to it at all constituted an action or merely the avoidance of one.
The seven
- 01Mad World — Gary Jules (2001)He spends most of the play either genuinely losing his mind or skilfully performing it. This song doesn't ask you to choose either.
- 02Black — Pearl Jam (1991)The raw, unresolved grief over his father's murder, dressed up endlessly in philosophical delay.
- 03Everybody Hurts — R.E.M. (1992)His 'to be or not to be' soliloquy is essentially this song's bridge, four hundred years early.
- 04Heathens — twenty one pilots (2016)Trust no one in the play survives the act of trusting someone — this is the soundtrack to that paranoia.
- 05Welcome to the Black Parade — My Chemical Romance (2006)Theatrical, doom-laden, and entirely unafraid of a long dramatic build — exactly his register.
- 06Bohemian Rhapsody — Queen (1975)A man wrestling publicly with murder, guilt, and his own fractured identity, delivered with maximum theatrical flourish.
- 07Don't Worry, Be Happy — Bobby McFerrin (1988)The single most contrary, infuriating song imaginable for this particular prince, which is exactly why it belongs here.
