No. 006 · Scientist · 1867–1934

“Half-Life, Full Volume”

Quietly relentless, intensely private, and utterly unconcerned with material comfort in pursuit of her work. She worked through grief, poverty, and institutional sexism with the same unshowy persistence she brought to her research.

Editor's note Curie reportedly listened to the entire playlist once, without comment, then returned silently to her notebook. Three hours later she remarked only that the Imagine Dragons track was 'not inaccurate.'

The seven

  1. 01Fix You — Coldplay (2005)She lost her husband Pierre suddenly to a street accident and continued his university lectures the following week. This is grief processed through total focus.
  2. 02The Scientist — Coldplay (2002)Almost embarrassingly literal, but the quiet devotion in this song matches her relationship with her own research exactly.
  3. 03Glow — Phish (2009)She kept radioactive samples in her desk drawer and carried them in her pockets — a quietly devastating, glowing detail of her life.
  4. 04Praying — Kesha (2017)Rejected by the French Academy of Sciences in January 1911 by two votes, largely for being a woman — then won a second, solo Nobel Prize in chemistry that same year.
  5. 05Unstoppable — Sia (2016)Drove mobile X-ray units to the front lines of World War I herself, saving an estimated one million wounded soldiers.
  6. 06Lux Aeterna — Clint Mansell (2000)Her body of work quite literally still glows faintly with radioactivity in the archives today. The title translates as 'eternal light.'
  7. 07Radioactive — Imagine Dragons (2012)It would be professionally negligent of this publication not to include it, and she would have found the literalism amusing exactly once.
