No. 004 · Emperor · 1769–1821
“Not Tonight, Josephine (A Lie)”
Restless, ferociously ambitious, and prone to grand romantic gestures undercut by ruthless pragmatism. He loved Italian opera passionately and reportedly hummed arias while planning military campaigns.
Editor's note Napoleon reportedly listened to this playlist while standing slightly too close to the speaker for dramatic effect, declared the Imperial March 'adequate,' and attempted to have Beethoven's dedication restored retroactively.
The seven
- 01Imperial March — John Williams (1980)He literally crowned himself Emperor and seized the crown from the Pope's hands mid-ceremony. This needs no further explanation.
- 02Numb — Linkin Park (2003)A man who never quite escaped his father's shadow of military failure, then conquered most of Europe partly to prove a point.
- 03Power — Kanye West (2010)The unfiltered self-mythologising energy of a man who designed his own coronation regalia.
- 04Creep — Radiohead (1992)A short, awkward Corsican outsider who clawed his way into French aristocratic society against constant mockery of his accent and height.
- 05Africa — Toto (1982)His disastrous Egyptian campaign, scientific curiosity, and obsession with distant glory all rolled into one chorus.
- 06Hurt — Johnny Cash (2002)St Helena. Exile. An empire built and lost within two decades. This is the sound of his final years.
- 07Short People — Randy Newman (1977)He was actually average height for his era — the 'short Napoleon' myth was British propaganda. He'd have been furious about this track and demanded its removal.
